Kate Garraways Ex-Husband becomes her new GMTV boss

Kate Garraway's ex-husband, who allegedly cheated on her with two women, will be the star's new boss at GMTV.

Ian Rumsey is being drafted in from ITV News to be the breakfast show's editor in what insiders say is an embarrassing blow to 43-year-old Kate.

Garraway married Rumsey in 1998 but they split five years later amid rumours that he had two affairs.

It was reported that she threw him out of their £500,000 home in Wargrave, Berkshire, in 2002.

She told a friend at the time: "Once was bad enough, twice was unforgivable. I could no longer trust him and I have started divorce proceedings."

But Rumsey - who joins GMTV in June - denied the allegations and said the couple split because of his wife's unsociable working hours. "There is no one else involved, I'm not seeing anyone," he said.

Gmtv bosses yesterday insisted Garraway and Rumsey are on "friendly terms" but a source said: "The appointment has raised a few eyebrows.

It's a bit embarrassing for Kate to be reporting to someone she was involved in a messy split with."

News of Rumsey's appointment comes as the GMTV axe continues to hang over Garraway, who returned to work yesterday after appendicitis.

The programme's revamp has already led to the departures of Penny Smith and Ben Shephard and the arrival of Adrian Chiles from BBC's The One Show. Commenting on the shake-up, Garraway said last month: "I'm worried, everyone is. Still, I've been here for 10 years and I'm so grateful for that. Anything else is a bonus. We're just keeping our fingers crossed."

Yesterday Rumsey - who is currently responsible for coordinating all ITV news output - insisted: "I've always had the utmost respect for Kate as a TV journalist and presenter. She's enormously experienced and talented. We are good friends outside of the office and have remained in contact.

"I'm delighted to be taking over the reins at GMTV. It needs to be back where it belongs - on top."
